Today marks the 2569th Buddha Jayanti, being celebrated with worship, prayers and teachings. Every year, Buddha Jayanti falls on the full moon day of the month of Baisakh. This special day remembers the contribution of Siddhartha Gautam, known as Gautam Buddha, who is respected around the world as a messenger of peace.
Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death all took place on the same date — Baisakh Shukla Purnima. So, Buddhist followers in Nepal and around the world celebrate this day with great respect and devotion. Traditional rituals are performed at stupas, monasteries and other sacred places, led by Lamas and Buddhist teachers.
Special events are taking place today in Lumbini, Swayambhu and Boudha. These sites have been busy with visitors since early morning.
Siddhartha Gautam was born in Lumbini Garden of Rupandehi 2568 years ago on this very day to King Shuddhodan and Queen Mayadevi.
Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, has been beautifully decorated for the occasion. Colorful lights have brightened the Mayadevi Temple, the sacred Pushkarini pond and surrounding areas. Stupas and monasteries have also been attractively decorated.
On Buddha Jayanti, special prayers, worship and a peace rally are being held in Lumbini. The main event will be inaugurated by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, according to publicity committee member Dhundiraj Bhattarai.
