The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticized the Congress party for sharing a controversial social media post targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the wake of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people.
The post, shared on Congress’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, featured an image that appeared to show a headless figure of the Prime Minister with the word “gayab” (missing) written across it. The BJP called the post “shocking” and accused Congress of echoing Pakistan’s narrative.
BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said, “Congress is acting like Lashkar-e-Pakistan Congress. While the Prime Minister is giving a strong message to Pakistan on terrorism, Congress is sharing a disrespectful image. This reflects their mindset of 'sar tan se juda’ (beheading).”
He also claimed that Pakistan is celebrating the Congress's criticism of the Indian government. “Rather than standing with the nation, Congress leaders are earning praise in Pakistan. Is this the kind of Opposition India needs?” Bhatia asked.
Meanwhile, Congress defended its stance by questioning the Prime Minister’s absence from the all-party meeting held after the attack. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh pointed out that although Modi returned from Saudi Arabia on April 24—the day of the meeting—he chose to travel to Bihar for a campaign rally instead. “He had time for election speeches, but not for a meeting on a national crisis,” Ramesh said.
Earlier, BJP slammed some Congress leaders for their remarks on the attack. Congress later clarified that those were individual opinions, not the official party line.
Bhatia also demanded answers from top Congress leaders, asking whether their support for the government was sincere or just for show. “Why hasn’t Rahul Gandhi commented on the controversial post? Why is Congress aligning with Pakistan’s tone?” he added.
