Bhaktapur District Court has acquitted social activist Ashika Tamang, who faced charges for protesting a toll fee on a suspension bridge in Sanga.
On Thursday, Judge Bishwanath Bhattarai cleared Tamang of criminal disturbance charges. Tamang was arrested last year after tearing up a receipt book and posting a video online criticizing the Rs 20 fee to cross the bridge connecting Suryabinayak Municipality-9 and Ward 10. Police had filed a case against her under the Public Offenses Act.
Earlier, during preliminary hearings on January 31, Judge Santosh Prasad Parajuli had granted her bail of Rs 20,000. Despite facing multiple cases, including a previous charge of indecent behavior in Kathmandu, Tamang maintained that collecting fees on a public bridge was unjust.
With Thursday’s verdict, the Bhaktapur court dismissed the charges filed by Suryabinayak Municipality via Jagati Police Circle, giving Tamang full legal clearance.
