The vibrant festival of Tihar concludes today with Bhai Tika, a celebration of the sacred bond between brothers and sisters that fills homes across Nepal with blessings, colors, and festivity.
On this day, sisters lovingly apply saptarangi tika, a blend of seven colors, on their brothers’ foreheads, wishing them happiness, prosperity, and a long life. Brothers, in return, offer gifts and heartfelt promises of protection. The ritual is completed with garlands of marigold and makhamali, a circle of mustard oil symbolizing safety, and a feast of traditional delicacies like sel roti and sweets.
According to the National Calendar Determination Committee, the most auspicious time for applying tika this year is 11:39 a.m., though families may perform the ceremony throughout the day.
