At least 40 bodies had been recovered so far, from the wreckage of a midair collision between a passenger jet and a Black Hawk helicopter that crashed into the Potomac River near Reagan National Airport.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, and President Trump confirmed Thursday that there were no survivors. Many of the victims remain unidentified.
The aircraft involved included American Eagle Flight No. 5342, a regional jet with 60 passengers and four crew members, flying from Wichita, Kansas. Also aboard was a U.S. Army Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk helicopter, carrying three soldiers.
Efforts at the scene have transitioned from a rescue mission to a recovery operation, according to D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Chief John Donnelly.
