Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been appointed for a second term as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Her appointment was confirmed after all member states agreed.
Her second term will begin on September 1, 2025. A Nigerian economist, Okonjo-Iweala, the first female and first African head of the WTO, was the only applicant for the position. Her current term ends on August 31, 2025. She previously competed for the World Bank presidency in 2012.
She has expressed gratitude to the WTO General Council and members for her reappointment and is ready to collaborate with global leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump.
