The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that around 2 million people in war-hit Gaza are facing famine.

According to BBC, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said during a meeting of WHO representatives from around the world that Israel’s blockade and lack of access for humanitarian aid have badly affected Gaza’s already weak health system.

He said people are dying from treatable diseases, but essential medicines are stuck at the border and cannot enter Gaza.

Since 2023, WHO has helped evacuate more than 7,300 patients from Gaza for treatment, but over 10,000 people still urgently need to be taken out for medical care.

Meanwhile, Israel announced yesterday that it will now allow essential food supplies into Gaza. It is hoped that this move will help prevent famine after a 10-week-long blockade.
