The US House of Representatives on Thursday narrowly rejected a proposal by Democrats aimed at preventing President Donald Trump from carrying out military intervention in Venezuela. In the vote, 213 Democrats and two Republican members supported the proposal, resulting in a 215–215 tie, which was enough for the motion to fail.
House Rules Committee member Jim McGovern stressed that Congress should exercise oversight rather than act as a blind supporter of the executive branch. Republicans, however, dismissed the proposal as unnecessary, arguing that the United States is not at war with Venezuela. Earlier, the upper chamber, the Senate, had also rejected a similar proposal amid pressure from the White House.
According to sources, the US military is reported to have launched an attack in Venezuela on January 3 and detained the country’s leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
