Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor and senior Rastriya Swatantra Party leader, Balen Shah, has sent warm greetings to all Nepalis on the occasion of Maghi. He described the day as not just a change in season but also a celebration of Nepal’s rich cultural diversity.

In a Facebook post on Magh 1, Shah began with a verse about unity in diversity: “Different drums, one rhythm; different steps, one beat; we are all Nepalis, and Nepal is our one country.” He said Magh 1 is “not only a day when nature changes, but also a day that brings together Nepal’s diverse cultures.”

Known for short social media posts, Shah shared a longer message this time to explain the cultural and historical importance of the day. He noted that Magh 1, also called Makar Sankranti or Maghe Sankranti, marks the sun’s move from Sagittarius to Capricorn, a very auspicious moment in the Nepali calendar.

He explained that the day is celebrated differently by different communities. Among the Newar people, it is called ‘Ghyah Chaku Sanlhu,’ while for the Kirat community, it marks the start of the Yele Sambat, their traditional calendar.

Shah also highlighted the Tharu community, for whom Maghi is the most important festival. “Maghi is the main festival of the Tharu people and the biggest celebration in their culture,” he wrote.

Even though the names, rituals, and ways of celebrating differ, Shah said the feeling behind all these festivals is the same. “The ways may be different, but the spirit is one — togetherness, joy, and celebration.”

He ended by wishing everyone new beginnings and prosperity. “May these sacred festivals bring happiness, new opportunities, and success to all Nepalis. Heartfelt greetings and best wishes on this special day,” he said.
