Former US President Donald Trump has announced a 100 percent customs tax on all foreign films. This decision could affect how Nepali movies are shown in the US.
Film distributor Patrick Subedi from Seven Seas International says this move might lead to higher costs. For example, a film that used to cost Rs 50 lakh might now cost Rs 1 crore to release in the US. This could make it harder to buy and show Nepali films.’
Because of the extra cost, the number of Nepali films released in US theaters may go down. Last year, 18 Nepali movies were released in the US, but now that number could drop to around 10 or 11.
Small cinemas and local markets that usually show Nepali films may also be affected. Distributors who only buy rights for the US might stop due to high expenses.
However, Subedi also sees some positives. He believes only quality films will be chosen and demand for good content may rise. Still, he warns that up to 50 percent of the market could shrink if the rule is applied.
The US is a major market for Nepali films. For example, Purnabahadurko Sarangi made nearly $10 lakh in the US. It’s still unclear if the tax will apply to Hollywood films made abroad or if it includes online platforms. Despite the uncertainty, Subedi said their planned film releases will continue as scheduled.
