US President Donald Trump has alleged that Chinese leader Xi Jinping is working in collusion with the heads of Russia and North Korea to undermine the United States.
Trump’s accusation came as China staged its largest-ever Victory Day parade in Beijing on Wednesday, a high-profile demonstration of its growing military strength.
Posting on Social, Trump wrote: “Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un as you plot against the United States of America.”
Although he criticized the show of unity between China, Russia, and North Korea, Trump has previously dismissed suggestions that their deepening ties represent a serious challenge to Washington’s global position. On social media, he also reminded followers of the “immense support and sacrifice” the US provided to China during World War Two.
“Many Americans died in China’s fight for Victory and Glory. I hope they are properly honored and remembered for their Courage and Sacrifice,” he added.
Xi was at the Beijing parade by 26 world leaders, including Kim and Putin a grouping seen by some analysts as a pointed signal to Western nations that have sought to isolate them.
Beijing has been working to cast itself as a strategic counterbalance to Washington since Trump’s trade tariffs unsettled the global economy and political order. While Trump has defended his tariff policy as essential for safeguarding US industries, critics argue it has strained diplomatic relations.
Asked by the BBC if China and its partners were attempting to build a coalition against America, Trump replied: “No. Not at all. China needs us.”
He continued: “I have a very good relationship with President Xi, as you know. But China needs us much more than we need them. I don’t see that at all.”
Speaking separately on a radio show Tuesday, Trump also downplayed concerns over a Russia-China axis, insisting that the US possesses “the most powerful armed forces in the world.”
“They would never dare use their militaries against us,” Trump said. “That would be the worst mistake they could ever make.”
Even so, he expressed disappointment with Putin after their meeting in Alaska last month failed to deliver a peace agreement for Ukraine.
“I’m very disappointed in President Putin, I can say that,” Trump remarked, adding vaguely that the US “will be doing something to help people live” in Ukraine.
China has avoided condemning Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and has faced Western criticism for indirectly aiding Moscow through purchases of oil and provision of dual-use materials — a charge Beijing rejects.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia is preparing fresh troop movements along parts of the front line.
