The devastating earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan late on August 31 has killed at least 1,124 people and injured 3,251 others, according to the Afghan Red Crescent Society.
More than 8,000 homes — mostly in Kunar province — were completely or partially destroyed, said Juma Khan Nayeel, head of information and publication at the society. Rescue teams are continuing efforts to pull survivors from the rubble, with officials warning that the casualty figures may rise further.
