Newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump warned BRICS countries against seeking alternatives to the U.S. dollar.

Trump warned that if these countries sought alternatives to the dollar, he would impose a  100% import tariff on their products.

On social media platform, Trump wrote, "The efforts of BRICS countries to move away from the dollar will no longer go unnoticed by the U.S. We can’t just stand by and watch this happen." Donald Trump said that he would require commitments form BRICS nation not to create a new currency as an alternative to the US dollar. He further added, "No BRICS currency can replace the dollar in international trade. If any country tries to do so, they must be prepared to leave America behind."

China and India are the key emerging economies in BRICS. During his election campaign, Trump had promised to impose heavy tariffs of up to 60% on Chinese goods in the U.S. market. For some time now, there have been discussions among BRICS member nations about the possibility of creating a shared currency. However, no concrete decisions have been made on this matter yet. Even Russian President Putin had mentioned about using local currencies in bilateral trade. BRICS consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
