Addressing a special session of the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, US President Donald Trump renewed his efforts to incorporate Greenland into the United States. During his speech, he criticized Europe and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), creating fresh tensions in trans-Atlantic relations.
Speaking on Greenland, Trump called for immediate negotiations to bring the region under US ownership, describing it as a matter of strategic national and international security interest. In his address, he stated that unless extreme measures were taken, the US might not gain anything.
Trump said that the United States was only demanding what he referred to as “Greenland,” and accused Europe of not moving in the right direction. Criticizing the burden-sharing within NATO, he claimed that the United States had been treated unfairly and had long contributed more than its partners. He also pressured NATO member states to agree to the US proposal to acquire Greenland from Denmark.
