Nain Singh Mahar, head of the Education Department of the Nepali Congress, said that step-by-step talks are ongoing with the protesting Nepal Teachers' Federation and a conclusion is expected by Wednesday.

Speaking with district presidents of the Nepal Teachers' Federation (NTF) and representatives of the Community School Management Committee Federation, Mahar said that after several rounds of talks since Monday, the government, political parties and teachers' leaders are close to a deal.

He said, “Serious discussions are taking place with the Nepal Teachers’ Federation so that protesting teachers can return to work by tomorrow. Homework is being done to make the talks result-oriented.”

Mahar, who is leading efforts from the NC to address the teachers’ demands, met with teacher leaders on Tuesday morning. He mentioned that political parties are positive about addressing the demands and will arrive at a conclusion soon. He also said that the demands which can be fulfilled immediately will be resolved through the cabinet, and preparations are underway to finalize the time for issuing the School Education Act. Many issues within the education sector will be addressed in a way that respects teachers, he added.

On Monday night, Laxmi Kishor Subedi, NTF president, said that some issues have been discussed, while others still need more discussion.

Teachers from across the country have been staging a Kathmandu-centric protest for the past 28 days, demanding a School Education that incorporates their demands mentioned in deals reached with governments in the past.
