Nepal has entered a new political chapter with former Chief Justice Sushila Karki taking charge as the country’s first female interim Prime Minister. Her appointment comes after President Ramchandra Paudel dissolved the House of Representatives in coordination with Army Chief General Prabhu Ram Sigdel, paving the way for fresh elections on March 5 (Falgun 21).
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Karki on assuming office. Writing in Nepali on his official X account, he said:
"Congratulations to the respected Mrs. Sushila Karki on becoming Prime Minister of Nepal’s interim government. India remains fully committed to the peace, progress, and prosperity of the brothers and sisters of Nepal."
India’s Ministry of External Affairs also released a statement, welcoming the new government and expressing hope that Karki’s leadership would contribute to peace and stability.
The interim government was formed following massive Gen-Z–led protests against corruption and social media restrictions, which turned violent and caused loss of lives and property. In response, the Nepal Army assumed command of national security.
India has reaffirmed that as Nepal’s close neighbour, democratic partner, and long-term development ally, it will continue to work together for mutual welfare and prosperity.
