After a meeting Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba at his Maharajgunj residence, senior leader Dr Shekhar Koirala has started talks with leaders supporting the special convention, including General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma.
While Deuba was holding separate meetings with his close leaders, Koirala reached Maharajgunj carrying messages from Thapa and Sharma. He was joined by Deputy General Secretaries Jeevan Pariyar and Badri Pandey, and leader Minendra Rijal.
Talking about his efforts, Koirala said that he is ready to make any sacrifice to stop the party from splitting. “Even if I have to drink poison, I will save the Congress from division. This is my final effort to bring both sides together,” he said. He shared the concerns and messages of the special convention supporters with Deuba, though he did not disclose details of any proposed agreement.
Sources say Deuba told Koirala that he is consulting legal experts and holding discussions with leaders such as Ramesh Lekhak and other party officials.
After meeting Deuba, Koirala continued talks with Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma. He is trying to act as a bridge between the two sides to find common ground. Earlier on Monday, he also met central committee members, district leaders, and senior legal experts close to him to discuss the situation.
Koirala again stressed that party unity is his top priority. He told leaders that the party must not split under any circumstances and asked everyone to remain calm and focus on unity.
As preparations for the special convention continue, some leaders have demanded the dissolution of the 14th General Convention leadership if they secure a two-thirds majority. Meanwhile, Deuba has reportedly warned that he may take legal action if the 14th Congress Working Committee is dissolved.
