Bhairav Risal, a veteran journalist, environmentalist and social worker, has died. He was 97.
Risal died in the course of treatment for cardiac and lung-related conditions at Baneshwor-based Frontline Hospital at 8 pm on Sunday.
Born in Tithali, Bhaktapur on Saun 29, 1985 BS (August 13, 1928), Risal devoted most of his life to journalism, environmental well-being and social service.
He was the chief reporter of the state news agency, Rastriya Samachar Samiti.
Risal was also the host of a popular program, 'Uhile Bajeka Palama', that aired through Radio Sagarmatha. Risal is the recipient of various awards such as Jagadamba Shree Puraskar (2006) and Rameshwar Sushila Memorial Literary Prize (2022).
Risal has stated in TV interviews that he had visited the Kalapani-Limpiadhura region, now at the center of a territorial dispute with India, as an interviewer in 1961 to conduct a national census.
As per his wish, Risal’s body will be donated to Patan Hospital for research and study.
Risal is survived by a spouse, two sons and two daughters along with a lasting legacy.
