With tensions flaring between nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan, Rastriya Swatantra Party lawmaker Shishir Khanal issued a stark warning in the Parliament on Friday: “Eighty Nepali students in Pakistan have asked for help, bring them home before it’s too late.”

Speaking in the House of Representatives, Khanal urged the government to act swiftly to ensure the safety of those students, who are now caught in a region. Khanal also pointed to Nepal’s unique responsibility as both a neighbor and current SAARC Chair. “We can’t stay silent while the region teeters on the edge. Nepal must speak up for peace and prepare for the worst,” he said.

While welcoming the Foreign Ministry’s statement condemning terrorism, he criticized the delay and called for more than just words. “If war breaks out, Nepal must be ready. What will it mean for our economy, our border security and thousands of Nepalese living in the region?”

He demanded the Speaker to make sure the government keeps the Parliament updated. “This is serious. We need to know what steps are being taken.”
