The ruling Nepali Congress (NC) has called for urgent action to resolve long-standing issues related to Transitional Justice (TJ).
In a meeting held at the residence of party President Sher Bahadur Deuba in Budhanilkantha on Friday, current and former party leaders discussed the need to speed up the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons (CIEDP).
After the meeting, Prakash Sharan Mahat, the NC spokesperson, told the media that although the law had been changed based on the Supreme Court’s orders, real progress has been very slow.
“It’s been too long. We changed the law as per court orders, but things have not moved ahead with the commissions not formed yet,” Mahat said. “We believe this issue needs to be solved without further delays.”
The government must talk with all relevant groups, including political parties, to make sure the process is fair and trusted by everyone, he said.
“We think the government should act quickly and work with all sides to fairly and openly solve the issues of enforced disappearances and truth and reconciliation.”
Mahat also pointed out that many important positions in the constitution are still empty and said the government must focus on filling them to ensure good governance and justice.
