Kathmandu Metropolitan City Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol has said that there should be a nationwide discussion to strengthen the implementation of laws.

Speaking at a program organized in Kathmandu on Friday on the occasion of Law Day, she said that Nepal has many laws in every sector, but their implementation is weak. She stressed that just making laws is not enough; proper implementation is more important.

She said that if laws are not properly followed and implemented, they become meaningless. She also mentioned that it's time to review whether the existing laws are practical and in keeping with changing times.

Deputy Mayor Dangol shared that judicial mediation centers have been set up in every ward of Kathmandu Metropolitan City to provide justice at the local level. She said the number of people coming for mediation has increased because of women’s networks and mediation centers in the wards. These services are being provided free of charge.

Meanwhile, Lalitpur Metropolitan City's Deputy Mayor Manjali Shakya Bajracharya said that the scope of judicial committees should be expanded to ensure fair justice. She pointed out that there are confusions between the Constitution and the Local Government Operation Act when it comes to legal matters, and these should be amended quickly.

She also said that since victims often cannot meet judges directly while filing cases in district, high or supreme courts, it creates problems in getting fair justice.

Speakers at the event emphasized the need for justice to be delivered with a fair and legal mindset to establish the rule of law.
