Police have taken five people into custody after a drone was found on the roof of Nepal’s Federal Parliament building — a restricted airspace.
Those detained include Bijay Babu Regmi, a professor and course coordinator at Techspire College in New Baneshwar, along with four of his students: Saman Maharjan, Sujal Kaji Shrestha, Samip Khatriwada, and Aftab Reza.
According to Kathmandu Police spokesperson SP Apilraj Bohara, the group was brought to the District Administration Office for further inquiry after the drone was discovered around 9:30 AM on Asar 24 (July 8). Police believe the drone took off from the Techspire College area before landing on the southern side of the Parliament building.
College Principal Laxman Pokhrel reportedly told police that the professor and students had been assigned a written semester project on Asar 13 (June 27) to build and test a drone.
The incident has raised questions about drone use near sensitive locations, even when done for academic purposes. Investigations are ongoing.
