With the House of Representatives election approaching, political parties have stepped up internal preparations, particularly for the proportional representation (PR) system.
Parties represented in the dissolved House as well as newly registered ones are holding meetings to finalize their PR candidate lists. According to Election Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, a total of 93 political parties have applied to take part in the PR system for the upcoming election.
To support the process, the commission has provided training to political parties, focusing on the updated provisions related to population-based percentages. The PR allocation has been determined in line with the National Population Census 2078 (2021), the commission said.
The Election Commission has released a detailed timetable for parties contesting under the PR system. Political parties are required to form inclusive groups based on the revised percentage and submit their closed lists of candidates on December 28 and 29.
