NEPSE Up by 27 Points as Investors Stay Hopeful

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) rose by 27.84 points last week as investors showed mixed reactions to expectations of a more flexible monetary policy from Nepal Rastra Bank and the approaching end of the fiscal year 2024/25.

The stock market opened at 2,703.96 points on Sunday and ended the week at 2,731.80 points on Thursday. During the week, the market reached a high of 2,743.09 points and dropped to a low of 2,662.59 points—showing a total fluctuation of 80.50 points.

The trading week began with a small gain of 2.40 points on Sunday. On Monday, the index dropped sharply by 22.35 points, and it slightly declined again by 0.14 points on Tuesday. However, the market bounced back on Wednesday and Thursday with gains of 22.04 and 25.89 points respectively.

Out of the 13 trading groups, eight saw their index values rise. The banking group performed the best with a 3.67% increase. On the losing side, the life insurance group dropped the most by 1.80%.

Among individual companies, Bhagawati Hydropower Development Company had the biggest gain of 18.31%, while Goodwill Finance Limited Debenture 2083 saw the highest loss at 18.49%. Nepal Reinsurance Company Limited recorded the highest transaction volume, totaling Rs 2.24 billion.

The total turnover in the market rose by 4.14% to Rs 41.58 billion for the week. The average daily turnover also went up from Rs 7.99 billion to Rs 8.31 billion.

Along with the NEPSE index, the total market value (capitalization) also grew—from Rs 4.505 trillion to Rs 4.551 trillion. This rise added Rs 46 billion in capital gains for investors over the week. Investors had earned a much higher Rs 181 billion from the stock market in the previous week.
