Nepal, despite being a notable coffee-growing country, still heavily depends on coffee imports to meet domestic demand. While coffee culture is expanding rapidly in the country, with cafes growing in number and an increasing number of consumers, local production falls short.

Nepal only produces around 500 metric tons of coffee annually across 43 districts, which is far less than required to satisfy the rising consumption.

The situation reveals that while Nepal has the capacity to produce more coffee, factors like limited production capacity, lack of proper infrastructure, and insufficient investment in commercial farming are hindering its ability to keep up with domestic demand.

This results in the country spending millions of rupees annually on coffee imports.
