The government is organizing a National Labour and Employment Conference in Kathmandu on March 10 and 11 to discuss ways to create more job opportunities within Nepal.
Speaking at a press meet on Friday, Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security, Sharat Singh Bhandari, said the event will help shape a long-term plan under the Domestic Employment Promotion Decade. He stressed the need for skill development and encouraged people to consider local jobs instead of going abroad.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will inaugurate the event, which will bring together 500 participants, including government officials, business leaders, trade unions, researchers and development organizations.
The conference, themed “Expansion of Production and Productivity: Sustainable Foundation for Internal Employment,” aims to find strategies to promote domestic employment.
Nepal has been facing a rise in labour migration due to a lack of jobs. In fiscal year 2024-25, over 714,297 Nepali workers obtained or renewed labour permits, highlighting a heavy reliance on foreign employment.
The conference will focus on policies to create sustainable jobs within Nepal, aiming for a stable and self-reliant workforce.
