Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has started exporting electricity to Bangladesh.
According to NEA, Nepal will send 40 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh every day until November 15 (Kartik 29).
A three-party agreement was signed on October 3 (Ashoj 17, 2081) between Nepal, India, and Bangladesh to export electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh through India’s transmission line. NEA spokesperson Rajan Dhakal said that the export officially started from midnight on Saturday.
Nepal has already been exporting electricity to India. Since electricity production in Nepal is low during winter, Nepal will export electricity to Bangladesh only during the rainy season. The agreement to export electricity to Bangladesh is for five years.
According to the agreement, NEA, Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), and India’s NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN) will work together, and Nepal will export 40 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh daily. Nepal will earn 6.40 US cents per unit for the exported electricity.
Nepal will send the electricity to Muzaffarpur, India, using the Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur transmission line. India will charge Bangladesh a fee for using its transmission line. Nepal Electricity Authority expects to earn around 9.4 million US dollars in five months from this export.
