The National Assembly on Wednesday passed the Appropriation Bill with a majority vote, moving a step closer to implementing the national budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The bill, presented by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel, was previously sent from the House of Representatives with recommendations.

The Assembly also agreed to consider two other important budget-related bills, the Finance Bill and the Loan and Guarantee Bill, which are key to the overall budget framework.

A major highlight of the session was the unanimous approval of the Customs Bill, 2023, also presented by Minister Paudel. He said the bill is aimed at improving customs efficiency, reducing revenue leakage, and increasing the use of technology. The law seeks to align Nepal’s customs regulations with international standards, including the Revised Kyoto Convention and the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement.

The new customs law includes provisions to simplify procedures, strengthen digital systems, and make inspections faster and more transparent. It will come into effect 91 days after certification.

The next National Assembly meeting is scheduled for Friday, July 4 at 1:15 PM.
