Judge Khusiprasad Tharu, who recently acquitted former Nepali Congress MP Aftab Alam in a murder case, was attacked with black ink by political activists. The incident took place inside the courtroom, where members of the Nepal Communist Party (Bahumat) threw ink on the judge and shouted slogans supporting their party. They claimed this act was a protest against corruption and decisions that go against the public interest.
Aftab Alam had previously been convicted by the District Court in connection with a gruesome case from 2008. On the day before the first Constituent Assembly elections (Chaitra 27, 2064), a bomb exploded at his house in Rautahat. It was alleged that the injured victims were later burned alive in a brick kiln. However, on Jestha 14, the High Court in Janakpur, Birgunj bench, acquitted Alam, stating the incident never occurred. He was released from Nakkhu jail shortly afterward.
Following the controversial verdict, the Judicial Council has begun an investigation into the two judges involved in the acquittal, Khusiprasad Tharu and Arjun Maharjan. The attack on the judge has raised concerns about courtroom security and the growing tension between political groups and the judiciary.
