Mumbai faced heavy rainfall and thunderstorms on Monday as the monsoon officially arrived. One of the under-construction metro stations, Acharya Atre Chowk on Metro Line-3 (Aqua Line) was flooded due to water entering the site.
The flooding happened after a barrier, meant to prevent rainwater from entering the station, broke under pressure from the downpour. As a result, water rushed down the stairs inside the station. Videos from the scene show people wading through water, with their pants folded, trying to exit the flooded station.
Due to this incident, the Acharya Atre Chowk station has been temporarily closed. Mumbai Metro later issued a public notice saying that services on Metro Line-3 will only run up to Worli Station for now. They apologized for the inconvenience and called it an “unforeseen technical issue.”
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, warning of more heavy rain, lightning, thunderstorms, and strong winds. Many roads in the city are already waterlogged, causing traffic jams and making it difficult for people to get around
