Bengaluru, known as India’s Silicon Valley, is facing serious flooding after heavy rain hit the city on Monday. Many roads are underwater, and daily life has been badly disrupted.
Authorities have issued a high alert, warning of more pre-monsoon rain due to a cyclonic system forming over the Andaman Sea. On Monday, three people, including a 12-year-old boy, lost their lives in rain-related incidents.
One tragic incident occurred when the wall of a tech company, i-Zed, collapsed in the city’s IT hub, killing a 35-year-old woman. Many companies have told their staff to work from home due to flooded streets.
Bengaluru received about 100 mm of rain in one day — the highest since 2011. Meteorologists say this amount of rain is rare for the city.
Floodwater has entered homes, submerged cars, and left people walking through knee-deep water. Videos on social media show how badly the city has been affected. Authorities say they are working around the clock in 210 flood-prone areas to fix the problems.
Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar urged residents not to panic and said that the government is taking action. However, the opposition BJP blames the Congress-led state government for not solving the city’s drainage and flooding issues, even after spending large sums on infrastructure. They are now demanding the immediate release of 10 billion rupees for relief work.
The government, on the other hand, says the city’s problems are long-standing and have been ignored for years by different governments.
Experts say rapid, unplanned construction over lakes and wetlands has made the flooding worse. Many citizens have taken to social media to express their frustration, criticizing poor planning and failing infrastructure.
