Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has said that the party has already decided, through its General Convention Committee, not to form electoral alliances in future elections.

Speaking at a program in Chitwan on Wednesday to mark the 43rd BP Memorial Day, Thapa said the party should contest elections on its own, staying true to its identity and principles.

The event was held under the theme “BP’s Ideology and the Campaign for Transformation in the Party.”

Thapa, who is known for pushing for reforms within the party, said voters should never be put in a position where they have to vote for a symbol other than the tree, which is the symbol of the Nepali Congress.

He explained that past alliances were made out of fear — fear of not being in government, fear that others would form a government without the party, and an unhealthy desire for power. “But if we move away from that mindset, the party will become stronger,” he said.

Thapa emphasized that party leaders and members should have the courage to stick to their principles, even if it means giving up short-term political benefits. “If we can reject easy, power-driven politics and remain true to our values, the party will grow stronger in the long run,” he added.

He also urged party leaders to let go of the fear of losing power and the desire for political positions. “We need to free ourselves from the greed for power,” he said.
