Devaraj Ghimire, former House Speaker and Nepali Congress candidate for Jhapa-2, has clarified his stance on the Mahakali Treaty after recent social media discussions and controversies. He said he has been targeted by algorithmic bias online and wanted to set the record straight.
“I have addressed questions about the Mahakali Treaty seriously and urged those spreading politics of hatred to study the treaty properly,” Ghimire stated.
He added that a video recorded with the intent to go viral misrepresented his views and has now been used as propaganda by a political party. “I was neither an MP nor a minister at that time, and I never signed any treaty. Discussions happened within the party, and I expressed my opinion along with other leaders,” he clarified.
Ghimire emphasized his decades-long political service, stating, “Politics is my service, not a profession. I have never sought position or personal gain. I have worked honestly, including during my tenure as Speaker, and contributed to the development of Jhapa-2.”
