At least six people have died, and dozens remain missing after a ferry sank off the coast of Bali, Indonesia, on Wednesday night. The ferry, carrying 53 passengers and 12 crew members, was traveling from Banyuwangi on Java Island to Bali when it capsized around 11:20 PM local time.

So far, 31 people have been rescued, but search and rescue efforts are still ongoing. Authorities believe the actual number of people on board may have been higher than the official manifest, a common issue in Indonesia that complicates rescue operations.

Survivors say the ferry tilted several times before capsizing. Some, like Imron and Bejo Santoso, managed to escape by jumping off and finding life jackets before being rescued by fishermen.

President Prabowo Subianto, currently on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, has ordered immediate emergency response efforts.

The ferry route between Java and Bali is one of Indonesia’s busiest. Marine accidents are frequent across the country’s vast archipelago due to poor enforcement of safety regulations.
