Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has announced an emergency curfew in downtown Los Angeles starting Wednesday.
The curfew was imposed after several days of protests against raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), targeting undocumented immigrants.
In a press conference, Mayor Bass said the curfew will be in effect from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM and is expected to continue for the next few days.
“I will consult with elected officials and law enforcement tomorrow about extending the curfew, but we do expect it to last for several days,” she said.
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell also said the curfew was necessary to protect people and property as unrest has been growing across the city.
Since taking office, President Donald Trump has started fulfilling his promise to crack down on undocumented immigration. Last week, the Department of Homeland Security reported that dozens of foreign nationals were arrested in Los Angeles during ICE operations.
In response to the rising protests, President Trump has ordered 2,000 National Guard troops to be deployed in Los Angeles. On Tuesday, he said the troops would stay in the city until peace is restored.
