Following the dissolution of the House of Representatives, the Election Commission (EC) has begun initial preparations for the upcoming national polls scheduled for 5 March 2026.

As part of the preliminary steps, the EC cancelled the Rupandehi-3 by-election earlier set for 2 November. Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said consultations with the government and other logistical planning have already started to ensure smooth conduct of the general election.

Meanwhile, newly appointed Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal has announced plans to revise the current budget to allocate the necessary financial resources for the elections.

The election follows the appointment of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as interim Prime Minister by President Ramchandra Paudel, after the resignation of KP Sharma Oli in the wake of the Gen-Z protests on 8-9 September. Acting on Prime Minister Karki’s recommendation, the President dissolved the House on 12 September and scheduled the election for early next year.
