Authorities have imposed an indefinite curfew in Kathmandu and other major cities after Monday’s violent crackdown left at least 19 people dead.

Despite the restrictions, grieving families and protesters gathered Tuesday outside the Federal Parliament in New Baneshwor, the same site where most of the Gen-Zs  were killed when security forces opened fire near the Parliament gates on monday . 

 

The protests, which began as a Gen-Z youth movement against corruption and the government’s ban on social media platforms, have now drawn in Nepalis from across society. Demonstrators are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and justice for the 19 protesters killed on monday.

 

Parents and relatives of the dead and injured staged sit-ins in front of Parliament despite the curfew.  some of  were students in uniform killed . At Kathmandu Medical College, 12 young protesters remain in the ICU in critical condition.

 

Along with Kathmandu, curfews have also been declared in Bhaktapur, Rupandehi, Lalitpur and other sensitive districts. Highways were blocked in several places as protests spread to cities including Pokhara, Butwal, Bhairahawa,  Birganj , Janakpur ,Itahari, and Damak.

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has already resigned, taking responsibility for the tragedy. Security has been tightened all over the country, with police, armed police, and even the Nepal Army deployed in major cities to enforce the curfew and prevent further unrest.
