Kathmandu: There can be no amnesty for serious crimes like murder and violence committed during Nepal’s conflict period (the decade-long conflict), Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said on Thursday (April 17).

Speaking at a national gathering of retired army and police personnel, PM Oli made it clear that justice must be given to victims. “We cannot allow acts like murder, chaos and religious conflict in a democratic country,” he stated.

He also assured the public that the long-awaited Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission for the Investigation of Disappeared Persons will now move forward without delay.

Nepal has moved on from monarchy to become a federal democratic republic, Oli reminded the public: people now have the right to compete fairly through elections.

“We started historic development works after forming a strong government. But due to political games, we were pushed aside. Now we are back and united again,” he said.

The Prime Minister also spoke with pride about Nepal’s past. He said the country has a rich history of unity and nation-building, and the current government is committed to handing over a prosperous, strong and proud Nepal to the new generation.

Wrapping up his speech, he pledged to protect Nepal’s borders and expressed confidence that the society will be guided by peace, culture and mutual respect.
