In 2025, Nepal scored an unenviable 34 out of 100 in the Transparency International’s corruption perception index (CPI) and helmed the 107th position out of 180 countries and territories even as the neighboring Bhutan scored an impressive 72, India and the Maldives 38,  Sri Lanka 32, Pakistan 27, Bangladesh 23 points and Afghanistan 17.

The 2025 score reflects Nepal’s consistently poor performance on the corruption control front over at least a decade or so.
Between 2012 and 2025, Nepal’s highest CPI score has stood at 35 (2023) and the lowest score at 27 (2012), suggesting that the country has not even been able to score a pass mark if the CPI scores over the years are any guide.

While the CPI score may not be the sole measure of corruption in a country, it surely gives an indication of how bad or good things are vis-a-vis good governance.

Against this backdrop, a piece of good news has come our way.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, addressing the annual general meeting of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce and the Industry Commerce Day in Kathmandu on April 9, said he had an inkling of corruption going on interrupted in the country, even during his reign!

This remark from PM Oli comes as a rude shock as all of us had an impression of living in a Ramrajya, right?

“Today, we need good governance and development,” PM Oli told the audience just the day before yesterday.

“There can be no compromise with corruption. I won’t indulge in corruption and I won’t let others indulge in it….. That’s what I have been saying all along. Still, I have a feeling that corruption is going on even now. It’s possible that corruption may have been continuing without our knowledge.”

PM Oli then called for support from the chamber to control the scourge called corruption.

The PM getting an inkling of an almost invisible thing called corruption is a great thing and so is his appeal for support to control corruption.

This realization on the part of the PM has imbued fresh hopes among the laity that corruption will come under control and good governance will see the light of the day in our lifetime, hasn’t it?

Summing up, PM's faint feelings have given high hopes, haven't they?

And hope springs eternal.
