The cholera outbreak in Birgunj Metropolitan City has continued to spread, with health authorities confirming 28 new cases within 24 hours, bringing the total to 240 as of Asoj 6. More than a month after the first case appeared, the source of the infection remains unidentified.

According to the Parsa District Health Office, 236 patients have already been discharged, while four remain under treatment. Since the outbreak began, 1,512 people with cholera or diarrheal symptoms have been admitted to 21 hospitals in and around Birgunj. Of them, 1,479 have recovered, while four are in intensive care, one in a high-dependency unit, and 28 are in general wards.

Public Health Officer Jaymod Thakur warned that the outbreak cannot be contained without community cooperation. “We have urged residents to boil or chlorinate their water, but many are ignoring the advice,” he said.

Starting Tuesday, health workers and volunteers will go door-to-door in affected wards to demonstrate proper water disinfection methods.
