In the Delhi Assembly elections of India, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won a two-thirds majority. BJP secured 48 seats in the 70-member assembly.
According to the Indian Election Commission, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won 22 seats. In this election, AAP leader and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, along with former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, were defeated. To form a government in Delhi, 36 seats are required. With this victory, BJP got the opportunity to form the government in Delhi after 27 years.
The Indian National Congress, the main opposition party in India's federal parliament, did not win any seats in Delhi. In the previous 2020 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party won 62 seats, and the BJP only won 8. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal congratulated the BJP and accepted the defeat.
Since Delhi is the capital city, both the BJP and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party considered the state elections a matter of prestige. Kejriwal's party, which has focused on welfare issues, had been running the government in Delhi since 2013. However, recently, Kejriwal and his party leaders have faced allegations of corruption.
