Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has been suspended from CPN-UML membership for engaging in political activities and making public statements that the party says go against its rules and the spirit of the constitution.

The decision was made official on Monday through a directive following the party's recent Central Committee meeting. According to UML, Bhandari’s recent behaviour does not reflect the neutral and respectful role expected from a former head of state.

Although she no longer holds a position within UML, Bhandari has been actively participating in political discussions and making remarks that are seen as critical of the party leadership. UML leaders say this goes against the party’s values and discipline.

The party also accused her of being part of coordinated efforts to weaken UML’s image and its nationalist agenda. While the UML says it respects her as a former president, it stressed that such figures should remain politically neutral, as expected by the constitution.

The party has instructed its members to stay alert to outside influences, including those coming through media and social platforms, which may be trying to disrupt internal unity.

Bhandari had officially cut ties with the UML after becoming President in 2015, but her recent political engagements have drawn criticism from the party. UML says the move is part of its broader plan to strengthen party discipline under its ongoing “Mission 2084” campaign.
