Speculation about former President Bidya Devi Bhandari’s return to active politics has grown after she renewed her CPN-UML membership. However, party chair and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli says there has been no official discussion on the matter.
Speaking in an interview with journalist Vijay Kumar Pandey, Oli said Bhandari had neither consulted him nor informed the party of her plans. “She hasn’t spoken to me or submitted any formal request,” he stated.
Bhandari renewed her party membership during a recent Madan Bhandari Foundation event attended by Oli, triggering internal debate and public curiosity about her next move.
Oli stressed that any decision to bring Bhandari back would require a formal party process, citing the sensitivity of a former President rejoining politics. “After holding such a high constitutional position, returning to party politics is a serious matter that needs institutional discussion,” he said.
He also raised ethical concerns, arguing that top constitutional office holders returning to party roles could create moral and political challenges.
When asked if Bhandari might take a leadership role through the UML’s upcoming 11th General Convention, Oli dismissed the idea, saying no such talks had taken place. He added that resuming leadership after nearly a decade outside party politics could be difficult for her.
