Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has voiced concern over the recent unrest led by Gen-Z, which caused heavy loss of life and property, and stressed that Nepal’s political path must stay within the constitution.
In her Thursday statement, she said the country was shaken by the police firing that killed youths on Monday and the ensuing violence, arson, looting, and clashes nationwide. The Ministry of Health reports 34 people have died, and thousands injured so far.
Bhandari extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery for the injured, urging the government to provide free and proper medical care. She emphasized that democracy, human rights, rule of law, and civil liberties are the pillars of Nepal’s political system and called on all sides to guide young people’s demand for good governance and transparency responsibly.
She expressed alarm over the destruction of key institutions like Singha Durbar, the Supreme Court, the President’s Office, and Parliament, saying such incidents require answers.
Noting that the prime minister has resigned and the president’s resignation accepted, Bhandari reminded that the government is now in a caretaker role, while constitutional institutions remain intact. She urged the president to coordinate the formation of a new cabinet through proper constitutional procedures.
Recalling the sacrifices that established Nepal’s democratic republic, she stressed that political transitions must respect constitutional principles. Bhandari called on parties to review past failures and focus on implementing economic policies and programs effectively and urged them to maintain unity and cooperation in difficult times.
She also highlighted the importance of respecting Gen-Z’s democratic enthusiasm, warning against decisions that could undermine popular sovereignty. Finally, she thanked the Nepali people for showing restraint and the security forces for maintaining peace and order.
