A ceremony at Rastriya Sabha Griha on Friday marked the official merger of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Socialist) and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unity National Campaign), led by veteran leader Bamdev Gautam.
Gautam, who has worked toward this unification for the past four years, announced that his faction had formally joined the Unified Socialist party, calling it a new chapter for Nepal’s communist movement.
Expressing his happiness, the 77-year-old leader said, “I am not just a little happy—I am very happy today.” Gautam recalled his political journey, which began when he first hoisted the communist flag in second grade.
He shared personal struggles, including barely passing his School Leaving Certificate (SLC) and spending nearly two decades underground. Gautam said he had taken two vows in life: to end the monarchy and to unite the communist movement.
Though the 2018 unification of UML and Maoist Centre had given him hope, its later collapse left him with an unfinished mission. Now, Gautam sees this merger as a second chance. “We are restarting the journey of building socialism,” he said.
Unified Socialist Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal and senior leaders warmly welcomed Gautam at the event, which was met with loud cheers from party supporters. Gautam noted that it took four years to move from his old office in Swayambhu to the new party headquarters, reflecting the long road to this union.
