A grieving UK family is facing more heartbreak after learning that the body of their loved one, who died in the recent Ahmedabad plane crash, may have been mixed up during repatriation.
Ashok and Shobhana Patel were on their way home to the UK on 12 June to reunite with their sons and grandchildren. Tragically, their flight crashed near Ahmedabad, India. As one of the first families to receive the victims' remains, the Patels’ relatives were shocked to discover what appears to be a serious error.
Their son, Miten Patel, told media that the experience has left the family deeply disturbed. “It’s obviously very upsetting,” he said. “I understand people were tired and under pressure, but there has to be a level of responsibility. You’re sending someone’s loved one back home. How do I know there aren’t other remains in the casket with her?”
International Media reported at least two cases of repatriation errors involving UK families, one where the wrong body was returned entirely, and another where remains of multiple victims may have been placed in the same casket.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs responded to the controversy, stating they have been working closely with British authorities since the concerns were raised. “All mortal remains were handled with utmost professionalism and due regard for the dignity of the deceased,” the ministry stated. “We continue to cooperate fully to address any issues.”
As investigations continue, affected families are demanding answers, and accountability, during a time of unimaginable grief.
