Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had what he called a highly meaningful and constructive meeting with his “dear friend”, his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, on the sidelines of the sixth BIMSTEC Summit, in Bangkok on Friday.
The one-on-one, roughly 30-hour reportedly took place at a hotel in Bangkok.
Oli's X post reads: Had a warm and heartfelt meeting with my dear friend, Prime Minister Shri @narendramodiJi. Our discussions were highly meaningful and constructive. I express my appreciation over this cordial exchange.
Indian PM Modi’s post reads: Had a productive meeting with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in Bangkok. India attaches immense priority to relations with Nepal. We discussed different aspects of India-Nepal friendship, especially in sectors like energy, connectivity, culture and digital technology. We also talked about some of the key positive outcomes from this year’s BIMSTEC Summit, especially in areas of disaster management and maritime transport.
The meeting comes at a time when the two leaders are not said to be in the best of terms and Nepal-India relations are not said to be in the best of forms.
The one-on-one meeting is not expected to placate those who look for transparency and accountability in facets of the bilateral ties.
Interestingly, Oli also dabbled with Hindi while posting about his meeting with his dear friend whereas Modi dabbled with Nepali too.
Before the meeting with PM Oli, Modi had a meeting with his Bhutanese counterpart, Tshering Tobgay, as the timeline suggests.
PM Oli has held a series of meetings with leaders from BIMSTEC member-states, including the host country, Thailand, and Myanmar.
