The US Department of Homeland Security has officially ended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for people from Nepal.
Starting Thursday, Nepali citizens living in the US under TPS will have 60 days to either leave the country voluntarily or find another legal way to stay.
After August 5, those still in the US under TPS will be considered undocumented. Earlier, it was expected that TPS would continue for Nepalis until December 24, but now that has changed.
This decision will affect around 7,500 Nepali citizens currently living in the US under TPS.
In a statement, US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the government reviewed the situation in Nepal and decided TPS is no longer necessary. The notice also said that Nepal has recovered from the earthquake that had earlier justified the need for TPS.
Previously, the Trump administration had also moved to end TPS for immigrants from Nepal and 17 other countries.
TPS is a special program that allows people from countries suffering from natural disasters, wars, or pandemics to live and work temporarily in the US.
