Bangladesh’s interim government has faced criticism after scrapping plans to hire music and physical education teachers in primary schools, a decision seen as yielding to pressure from conservative religious groups.

The move, announced on November 3, followed weeks of protests labeling the initiative “un-Islamic.” While officials cited logistical challenges, critics argue it reflects political pressure. The original plan aimed to promote children’s holistic development across over 65,000 government schools.

The decision sparked protests from students, teachers, and cultural activists, who argue arts and physical education are crucial for creativity and teamwork. Journalist Saqlain Rizve, writing in The Diplomat, warned that such concessions to religious pressure could threaten Bangladesh’s secular and educational principles, allowing radical forces to influence what children learn.

Supporters, however, claim arts and sports classes are unnecessary at the primary level, with some advocating for military-style physical training instead.
