A tragic incident at Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on Tuesday night has killed at least 15 people and injured hundreds of others. The toll is feared to rise as scores of them are stated to be in a critical condition.
The incident was triggered by the sudden rush of pilgrims following rumors that created panic among the crowd. When people fell on the ground, due to the chaotic situation, some were trampled on and died. Over 70 ambulances were dispatched in the Sangam area for the transportation of injured people to hospitals.
The administration has shut 13 Akhadas-a place of religious stay where the Amrit Snan is held-saying the Sangam Ghat was getting too crowded. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on the issue.
The incident occurred on the day of Mauni Amavasya, considered highly auspicious for holy bathing, which attracted millions of devotees. Despite the deployment of more than 60,000 police personnel, the dense crowds pose significant safety risks. Authorities are focusing on managing the situation and assisting the affected.
